COMFORTIS ACTIVE INGREDIENT
The active ingredient in Comfortis flea control formula is called Spinosad. Spinosad has two different chemical components called spinosyn A and spinosyn D. Spinosad is classified as a new group of insecticides that has recently been registered by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as an environmentally conscious way to control many different insect populations. The active component in Spinosad is actually derived from a rare actinomycete bacterium that was first discovered in the soil of a Caribbean Island. This active component has never again been found in nature, and the bacterium that contains it was named Saccharopolyspora spinosa. The main advantage of Spinosad is that it combines the effectiveness of a synthetic insecticide with the benefits associated with a biological pest control organism. Spinosad kills fleas by causing agitation of a flea’s central nervous system, which causes death approximately 1 to 2 days after the flea ingests the substance. As of right now, Spinosad is highly valued in resistance management programs, since it has a very unique mode of action against insects.
COMFORTIS PRODUCT INFORMATION
There are several different side effects that may manifest after an animal ingests Comfortis oral tablets. The most common side effect is vomiting, with other side effects including lethargy, diarrhea, coughing, skin rash, hyperactivity, decreased appetite and excessive salivation. Unlike some other oral flea medications, Comfortis is effective at controlling flea infestations for approximately one month for dogs.
COMFORTIS CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND RATINGS
Most customer reviews about Comfortis cite it as being a very effective flea control product for dogs. However, the side effects of the product did cause concern among some consumers. Since extreme lethargy can be a side effect of Comfortis, this can cause dogs to become limp and unresponsive approximately two to four hours after the formula is ingested. This can be a very scary experience to witness, though it is very important to be familiar with all possible side effects before using this product for any pet. Comfortis is a systemic formula, and because of that, some pet owners seem to be initially reluctant to try it on their pets.

My 14yr old lab mix was very healthy, after giving him comfortis within 1 day he was falling down, completely disoriented, had a seizure like attack, seemed like a stroke, we babied him and each day he got slightly better, took a full two weeks for him to finally be himself again, This is the worse stuff, i had always given him advantage and he did great with it, we were out of town and the animal hospital i went to was out of advantage but highly recommended the comfortis
Hi Sandi
Thanks for stopping by with your experience of Comfortis. I’m glad that K9 Advantix works for your pet.

We have a 14 month old Australian Shepherd that we got a few months ago and after years of having other Aussies and using products that you put on them (K9 Advantix, etc) and not liking the greasy spot, etc on them we asked our vet about the Comfortis and liked the idea of a pill instead. But, we have had issues each time (3) that we have given it to him. He is very lethargic, won’t eat and gets diarrhea! Not happy about this at all so we’re going to go back to using the K9 Advantix or something like it because we don’t want our “guy” to feel this way (or perhaps worse) and we never had problems other than the “grease” spot with the other products.
Hi Hilary
Thanks for stopping by and I hope your dog gets better very soon. Once you’ve seen the Vet and had the tests done, do let us know what the cause of your dogs illness is.

I have a 56 pound chow/retriever mix that I rescued from the pound in October 2010. Last month I gave him a dose of comfortis and although it seemed the flea problem abated, after a few days, he developed a leision on his chest that was quite big and bloody. Within a day, bumps began appearing under his fur, and his fur began falling out in huge handfuls. But I didn’t know that one might be related to the other, or that either might’ve been caused by Comfortis. 30 days later, after another leision appeared and the first had turned into a bald spot, I gave the dog another dose (I still hadn’t thought one was related to the other). Then leisions began appearing everywhere on his body! A week later, and I have an appointment with the vet on Monday to try and diagnose and control these bloody leisions erupting all over his body, even his head and face, and the ultimate decimation of his beautiful red fur. The only variable that is different than usual is the use of Comfortis. Unless possibly this is some sort of mutant case of ring worm, I believe strongly that it is caused from this medication. I will keep you posted.
