Advantage for Cats Reviews
Advantage for Cats
Advantage for Cats is a formula that is designed for use as a complete flea control formula. It is marketed as killing all biting fleas within three to five minutes after application, and is available for use in cats that are eight weeks of age or older. Advantage for Cats is only marketed as being a formula designed for eradicating fleas, and is not currently effective against preventing tick infestations on cats. Advantage for Cats is manufactured by the Animal Health division of the Bayer Company, a well-known pharmaceutical company. In addition to manufacturing Advantage for Cats, Bayer also produces Advantage for Dogs, Advantage Multi (for both dogs and cats) and K9 Advantix.
FORMULAS
There are currently two different Advantage for Cats formulas available, which are based on a cat’s overall total weight. There is one formula for cats up to 9 lbs in weight, and a formula designed for cats that weigh over 9 lbs. Advantage is active for approximately four weeks, at which time it needs to be reapplied to an animal’s skin. To apply Advantage for Cats, squeeze the application bottle’s entire contents to the back of a cat’s neck, as close to the skin as possible. The formula is absorbed through a cat’s skin, and should begin to become active momentarily. Advantage for Cats is available by obtaining a prescription from a veterinarian, and is moderate to high in price. Currently, Advantage for cats is only available in a 4 – month and a 6 - month package.
ACTIVE INGREDIENT
The active ingredient contained in Advantage for Cats is called imidacloprid. Imidacloprid is a neuro-active insecticide that is modeled after nicotine. Imidacloprid is actually a specialized insecticide that was developed and manufactured by Bayer’s CropScience division. Imidacloprid is now used in Advantage for Cats formula, and works by acting on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in insects.
ADVANTAGE FOR CATS CUSTOMER REVIEWS AND RATINGS
Most customer reviews about Advantage formula for cats are about 85-95% positive. Some of the complaints of some pet owners cited that the formula didn’t seem to be “as effective” as it had been for them in the past. Some people even claimed that the formula seemed to “attract fleas”, noting that the number of fleas on their pets seemed to increase after applying this formula to their cats. Another complaint by cat owners was that the formula seemed to only be effective for one to three weeks, not the four weeks that were stated on the package. However, due to this being a topical ointment, these complaints could possibly result from improper or incorrect application of the product.
Positive reviews about Advantage for Cats stated that it was effective for the full four weeks, and that it worked just as advertised. Though the formula is relatively expensive, most pet owners stated that the price was worth paying for an effective product. Though some cats seemed to have an allergic reaction to Advantage for Cats, this seemed to be a relatively rare occurrence. Because Advantage for Cats requires topical application, skin reactions to the product’s ingredients are possible.

I used Advantage over 9 pounds on my 8 year old healthy male Oriental Short-hair cat. Within minutes of application he became disoriented, could not walk straight, looked and acted drugged, his voice was strange, & he became very dry in the mouth. He could not jump up on the scratching post without wobbling. I immediately called the emergency vet and asked if I should wash off the Advantage…I used shampoo for about 6 washings, dried the cat, gave him 100 cc subcutaneous fluids and hand fed him some moist cat food. He was disoriented and druggy for over an hour. Had I not been there with the cat after I applied the Advantage he could be a dead statistic.
